Altrusa International of Ashburton Inc.

Ashburton is located on the Canterbury Plains about 75 kilometres south of Christchurch on the East Coast of the South Island.  Ashburton District stretches from the spectacular Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by beautiful braided rivers and high country lakes.

Most of the productive land is intensively farmed and is very bountiful - producing dairy cattle, sheep and many diverse crops.  The total population of the District is about 28,000 people.

Mt Hutt is a major winter recreational focus in the district. The skifield provides the longest runs and longest season in the Southern Hemisphere and entices skiers, snowboarders and bungy jumpers to its slopes.

The Rakaia and Rangitata are classified as nationally important angling rivers and they also provide thrill seekers with world renowned rafting and jetboating experiences.

Beautiful back country lakes have a magic of their own and are possibly the best kept secret of the district. Lake Heron is arguably the most important wetland wildlife habitat left in the South Island. Lake Clearwater is home for the famous New Zealand Rainbow Trout and a Mecca for wind-assisted sail boats. Lake Camp is a favourite for boaties and water skiers of all ages.

These pursuits, along with trails for walking, tramping, mountaineering and mountain biking, wonderful updrafts for paragliding and picturesque spots for safe picnicking, provide the very best of Kiwi outdoor adventure. There are also five attractive golf courses in the district.

Altrusa International of Ashburton Inc. was formed in 1973 and chartered in 1974 and some of our charter members are still very active.  Ashburton’s club has a current membership of 44 and is one of the largest in New Zealand.  Our meetings are held twice monthly (except January) and we organise many worthy projects and lively functions throughout the year.  Our members come from very diverse backgrounds; some are newcomers to the district, others were born and bred here, many are relatives, friends and neighbours.

Ashburton is a close-knit, caring district and Altrusa Ashburton is known locally as an active club that offers service and support to the community and stimulating companionship to its members.  In 2006 we hosted the Altrusa District Annual Conference.  We have several on-going activities including: a Health Education Bursary that is awarded annually, Books on Wheels, Meals on Wheels and upkeep of the Stillborn Memorial.
