Timaru Altrusa Club offers ‘stash’ for ‘rehashing’

A first for our Club and possibly Timaru was our inaugural Beads Baubles and Fabric Bazaar.  The public cottoned on to the idea of selling their extra stash stored in suitcases by hiring a table or donating to the Altrusa table.  Anything that could be cut, sewn, knitted or used to decorate was there for sale and many people attended in search of a bargain or two and didn’t go away disappointed.  The popularity of the day reflected the resurgence of craft work and there were many requests for another day the same before Christmas.  Although no decisions have been made about another fundraiser such as this, it was a financial success raising around $1100.

First Master Chef winner cooks for Heart Children and Adult Literacy

The Altrusa Club of Timaru was fortunate to be offered the book launch of Brett McGregor’s “Taste of a Traveller” to raise funds for South Canterbury @ Heart [formally known as Heart Children] and Adult Literacy.
South Canterbury @ Heart will use the funds to provide goodie bags of essential items for young patients and their families heading to Starship Hospital and Adult Literacy will use the funds for on going training of volunteers.
South Canterbury @ Heart had spoken to Altrusa late last year and touched our hearts with their determination to make each child’s visit to Starship a little bit more bearable so there were no qualms about making it a recipient of the Master Chef evening.  Likewise as Altrusa places an emphasis on good literacy skills the Adult Literacy was deemed a worthy recipient as well.
Brett treated the audience to a demonstration of two recipes included in his new book which was on sale.  Smells of star anise, kaffir lime leaves and tumeric permeated the venue as he cooked and answered many questions from the receptive audience.  The $1200 raised has been shared between the two organizations.

Student Mum of two selected as winner of Scholarship

Study is getting financially easier for an early childhood student and mum of two, Heather McIntyre, who was chosen to receive the Timaru Altrusa Club’s Olwen Norton Altrusa Scholarship valued at $1000.
The money will be used to purchase a laptop to assist in on line study and reference books.
The Scholarship, awarded annually by the Club, is named after a long serving member of the Timaru Club and who was a District Fifteen Governor between 1991 and 1993.  It is awarded to a person who requires monetary assistance to advance or continue their skills and education.
Heather said the scholarship has helped her immensely in her second year of study.  Each applicant had to outline their planned career path, provide an understanding of study options available to them, provide evidence they are hard working and show initiative in their approach to study thus proving that they are deserving of Altrusa’s support.
