What is a leave of absence?
There can be times in an Altrusans life when they may need a break to take care of family/work issues. A leave of absence helps to take the pressure off. In order to have a leave of absence the member must be a fully paid up member. They should write to the club board of directors requesting leave for a defined period and providing a brief outline of why. The board will then usually grant the leave request. The reasons should not ordinarily be disclosed to club members in general. The granting of leave does not require club approval and members are usually advised that a member has been granted a leave of absence. Leave can be granted for up to 12 months. While a member is on leave they should still be encouraged to participate in club activities if time allows and should still receive club communications i.e newsletters. It is nice if clubs can keep in contact with the member and provide support if required. While on leave the member should have a permanent meeting apology recorded. This does not mean that they cannot attend meetings but rather that they do not have to try to remember to put in apologies etc.

A Little Comfort
The discomfort of undergoing a course of chemotherapy will be lessened at Ashburton Hospital, thanks to Ashburton Altrusa members. Proceeds from the group's annual tree of remembrance in the Ashburton Arcade and other fundraisers have been used to buy a special chair which moulds to fit the user's body shape. Altrusa president Rosalind Stewart said the chair was perfect for people who were required to sit for long periods while treatment was administered. It will be kept in Ward Three. During the handover Ms Stewart checked out its comfort and gave it the thumbs up. With her is incoming president Maureen Patterson and IV clinical nurse specialist Jane Wright.
