The Nelson Altrusa Club is one of 25 in New Zealand and has a proud record of community service over the past 25 years. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday (Business meeting) and 4th Wednesday (Programme meeting) each month at the Victory School, Vanguard Street, Nelson, commencing at 5.30pm for fellowship and meeting from 6pm.
 

Nelson Altrusa Club undertakes service projects in our communities.

This often means undertaking a fundraising project in support of a specific service project. Service projects undertaken have included:
 

bulletProviding instruments for Junior Orchestra
bulletContributing to a children’s playground at Nelson Hospital
bulletPurchase of a chairlift for disabled at swimming pool
bulletDeveloping a memorial garden for families grieving loss of baby
bulletBuilding, maintenance and on going operation of Altrusa House -
an emergency accommodation house at Nelson Hospital
bulletContributing to Alan Duff’s “Books in Homes”
bulletSupporting ARLA – Adult reading & learning
bulletImplementing a “You Can Do It” reading project with children at
Victory School
bulletRunning a “Tell me a Story” competition for 5-8 year olds
bulletEstablishing an annual Altrusa Scholarship of $2000 for a secondary
school student with who has demonstrated leadership skills
bulletAssist financing of the Hospital Buggy to transport elderly and disabled
people around the hospital site
bullet“Magic Mums” project, delivered biannually, provides a weekend of
respite for the mothers of special needs children
bulletHosting an annual UNIFEM breakfast to make funds for women in
community leadership in the pacific region
bulletSupporting individual children to attend Riding for Disabled
bulletSupporting individual young adults to attend Outward Bound
and Spirit of Adventure leadership training
